Artist’s Statement

I am a representational painter who likes to experiment with contemporary art practices that combine my love of drawing and the formal elements of picture making with subject matter that is personally relevant. I have spent a great deal of time experimenting with art materials such as *encaustic wax, collage, stained glass, and LED lights to create visual effects that inspire a viewer to stop and look closer.

The collection of paintings in this exhibit is a culmination of three different series of work that I have explored over the past eight years. Each piece utilizes oil paint and *encaustic wax in its construction, and contains both literal and ambiguous storytelling elements.

The newest work represented here are the lightbox paintings, which can be identified by their black frames. Each piece is painted on Plexiglass and has a RGB LED lighting system inside. The LED lights are controlled by a remote where the illuminated color can be selected to stay in a static mode or set to slowly transition through a 7-color palette.
