Classroom Arts Education

There's a symbiotic relationship between artists and students; both parties benefit and evolve as they share ideas and perspectives.

At Space 4 Art, we are committed to meeting kids where they are, tailoring programming to meet specific needs identified by both our partner organizations and the students themselves. Our current programs are serving unhoused youth and K-12 students in the greater Logan Heights, City Heights, and Bay Terraces areas. We are thrilled to be partnering with King Chavez Neighborhood of Schools, Monarch School, Audubon K-8 School, Marcy High School, Crawford High School, Pro Kids First Tee – San Diego, and Zamorano Fine Arts Academy, and we are looking forward to forming new partnerships as well.

King-Chavez Neighborhood of Schools

This innovative charter school is one of our long-term partners, whom we have served by providing summer-internship opportunities and facilitating after-school programs in music, drumming, and visual arts. This year, artist Sean Francis Conway is teaching students to climb the “art mountain,” and musician Abril Diaz is teaching rhythms and drumming.

Monarch School

Our resident artists provided workshops in cyanotypes, sculptures, mask-making, paper marbling, instrument-making, clay work, and ink drawing, and led workshops to create artwork for the school’s annual gala. Our latest offering immersed students in the story of Diwali, the Indian festival of lights, where they created their own “diyas.”

Audubon K-8 School

We partner with Audubon to provide arts programming to middle schoolers who have no access to the arts during the school day. Resident artist Brennan Hubbell worked with students to create zines, wood sculptures, still-life drawings, greeting cards, and much more. Students are proudly displaying their sculptures and are looking forward to continuing this program in 2024.

A Peek Inside the Classroom

Behind the Scenes, Past and Present

Over the years, Space 4 Art has established partnerships with many schools, nonprofit organizations, and arts groups serving K-12 students. We have hosted classes and art exhibits with AIGA Link; collaborated on veterans storytelling performances with So Say We All; mounted a Preuss School exhibit based on environmental sustainability; done workshops with the San Diego Guild of Puppetry; provided Free 4 Alls in which Space 4 Art volunteers taught a series of free classes based on their expertise; hosted Wounded Warriors art shows; collaborated on gallery exhibits with the Mesa College Museum Studies Program; designed the Voice in Art classes and exhibit with the Family Youth Round Table; produced the ABC’s of Rock concert with School of Rock; and curated the John Muir Elementary J-Make Enrichment Program exhibit, just to name a few. In 2021, Space 4 Art partnered with The Children’s Initiative, providing arts programming for more than 300 unaccompanied migrant children at the San Diego Convention Center.

We offer the majority of these programs free of charge to our partners. Your generous donations help us pay our teaching artists and cover administrative costs.
