Space 4 Art Welcomes Elijah Rubottom!
Space 4 Art is excited to welcome Elijah Rubottom, our newest resident artist! Below is an introduction from the artist to his work and current practice.
“I choose processes I can fall in love with and devote myself to - hand-built ceramics, breaking and sculpting breezeblocks, cyanotypes, wax-resists, printmaking, fire-stenciling on paper, etc. Through these processes I aim to make the familiar new again, awe-inspiring. Cyanotypes of breezeblocks make the concrete ephemeral. Photographs of a flashlight against a semi-translucent shower curtain make everyday objects sublime and otherworldly.
During the height of the pandemic and the black lives matter movement, while working from home, along with many other teachers, I became involved in a social justice class and an art class, both serving students with disabilities. For many years I have loved serving this population but these particular experiences, in the face of such collective turmoil and tragedy, clarified what I have always known - art liberates our spirits, helps people find their voice and empowers people.
My range of processes, materials and subject matter have changed over the years but I often return to them with a fresh eye and a renewed awareness of their ability to liberate and empower.”
